Deadly in the Dark (night shoot)

Deadly in the Dark is a night shoot, running from dusk until midnight and featuring land navigation, light discipline practice, team movement and radio comms, using night vision and active/passive aiming systems, and of course engaging threats in low light conditions. Exercises are typically split between some range drills and movement along trails in the woods.

No previous experience with night shooting is required to join Deadly in the Dark, but shooters must be familiar with the safe operation of their weapon systems in regular daylight conditions. Limited guidance on basic shooting will be provided, to maximize the time trainers can spend helping groups adapt to low light tactics.

Learning objectives

Deadly in the Dark is a set of exercises designed to practice communication, movement, and shooting in low light conditions. There is not a fixed course outline, the emphasis is on practicing night shooting skills.

There is still a strong focus on learning, and our trainers/RSOs will coach every participant through any new skills he or she is unfamiliar with, including:

• Working with weapon lights/white light/light discipline.
• Using night vision systems.
• Basic radio protocol and team communication.
• Night shooting, and using active and passive aiming systems in low light.
• Advanced weapon handling (e.g. combat reloads, transitions).
• Threat assessment and decision making in low light engagements.
• Land navigation and small unit movement over uneven terrain.
• Advanced teamwork and communication.

Exercises and scenarios change every month with a focus on different skills. If you currently own - or want to try - weapon lights or a type of NVG/thermal vision device in a live fire environment, Deadly in the Dark is for you.

Schedule

Night shoots are scheduled once per month, typically on a Saturday, starting at 7pm and running until approximately midnight. Check the calendar for upcoming dates.

Please plan to arrive approximately 15 minutes early to sign in at the range and complete the safety briefing.

Gear/pack list

Any night vision/white light solution is acceptable, and limited equipment is available for use/rent for participants who want to experience night shooting before investing in the equipment.

• 22LR semi automatic rifle and/or 22LR semi automatic pistol - note 22LR ONLY permitted after dark, we recommend the 22LR conversion kit by CMMG for your standard 556 AR-pattern rifle (available for rent).
• Sling for your rifle, 4 or more magazines for rifle and pistol. Any optic or iron sight configurations are acceptable.
• Sufficient standard factory loaded 22LR ammunition (e.g. no incendiary or tracer). Night shoots are a high round count experience, so expect to need between 100 and 250 rounds.
• Belt and/or chest rig with mag pouches and holster. This is not essential, but opens up access to a wider range of drills and activities.
• White light/admin light or red light, and weapon light securely attached to rifle.
• (Optional) Night vision or other low light vision solution, including spare batteries.
• (Optional) standard walkie radio.
• (Optional) basic IFAK with TQ.
• Appropriate range attire; specifically long pants and closed shoes, and standard eye and ear protection is required to be worn at all times.
• Consider the weather and environment. We recommend everyone bring some water and snacks and - depending on location and time of year - consider layers as temperatures can drop quickly after dark.
